How to Help

Domestic Violence Victims

If you suspect someone is being abused by their partner there are ways to help

  • Don’t be afraid to bring it up. Letting your loved one know what you see and that you are concerned can open the door to a conversation.
  • Let them know that our Advocates are available to talk 24/7/365. They do not have to stay at our shelter to receive our services. We welcome people of all genders and backgrounds.
  • Acknowledge that the situation is very difficult and scary, and they have done their best to cope so far.
  • Be supportive and non-judgmental. Saying “You have to call the police!” or “Why don’t you just leave?” can be very invalidating and ignores the complexity of abusive situations.
  • Focus on your loved one’s strengths. Most likely they are made to feel they have little self-worth.
  • Encourage your loved one to do things with you and other friends and family, and to take part in other activities outside of the abusive relationship.
  • If your loved one breaks up with the abuser, continue to be supportive. If your loved one stays with the abuser, continue to be supportive.
  • Talk with your loved one about ways to stay safe, such as emergency phones or safe places in the home.
  • Remember that you cannot “rescue” your friend or loved one. Focus on compassionate listening and being supportive of their choices.
